Native to parts of China and the Himalayas, Rubus biflorus is a vigorous briar with dazzling, tall white stems throughout the winter months. The leaves when they emerge in spring are dark green. Once mature, small clusters of scented white flowers can appear on the branches in early summer.

The coloured and thorny stems make Rubus biflorus a spectacular addition to a winter garden, especially when planted in small groups and intruder proof once established!

  • Position: Full sun or light, dappled shade.
  • Soil: Well drained, fertile soil.
  • Hardiness: Hardy.
  • Flowering Period: May.
  • Flower Colour: White
  • Rate of Growth: Vigorous.
  • Habit: Rubus biflorus grows to be a medium sized densely branching shrub if left unpruned.
    • Height: 3 m (10 ft) or up to 1.5 m (5 ft) if pruned yearly.
    • Spread: 3 m (10 ft)
  • Pruning: Rubus biflorus makes an effective garden plant if pruned back to 30 cm (1 ft) above the ground each spring each year or every two years before coming into leaf. This reduces the end size and encourages it to produce vigorous upright stems with particularly good winter stem colour.
