A rare plant in the UK, Ailanthus altissima 'Hongye' grows to be a small to medium sized tree here in Derbyshire, with very large, purple red leaves which are particularly colourful in Spring. In summer, the older leaves gradually turn dark green as they age.

Ailanthus altissima 'Hongye' is a superb ornamental tree best suited to a position in full sun for best leaf colour. Larger leaves will be seen if planted in a position with some shelter from strong wind.

Supplied Size: 4/5L pot (approx 60 - 80 cm tall)

  • Position: Full sun or light, dappled shade.
  • Soil: Any well drained, fertile soil.
  • Hardiness: Hardy. Ailanthus are very tough and usually, easily grown trees able to tolerate a wide range of conditions, such as: dry conditions, wet conditions, poor soil nutrition and atmospheric pollution.
  • Rate of Growth: Moderate.
  • Habit: Ailanthus altissima 'Hongye' grows to be a small to medium sized branching trees.
