Alnus cordata is a handsome and vigorous, slender deciduous tree with bright green rounded leaves and an upright, conical habit when young, spreading a little once mature. Established plants have long dark yellow catkins. Native to parts of Southern Italy.

A fairly wind tolerant tree suitable for a sunny positiion and most soils.


  • Position: Full sun.
  • Soil: Any fertile soil. Will tolerate damp conditions
  • Hardiness: Hardy.
  • Rate of Growth: Vigorous.
  • Habit: Alnus cordata grows to be a medium to tall tree with a conical tree.
    • Height: up to 12  15 m (40 - 50 ft)
    • Spread: 4 - 5 m (13 - 16 ft)
