Native to China, Salix magnifica is a rare, upright large shrub or eventually very small tree in the right conditions with large and handsome, magnolia-like leaves. Established plants can have eye-catching long catkins, sometimes up to 10 inches in spring.

Avoid planting in cold, windy areas. Best in planted in a warm, sheltered position out of the wind.

  • Position: Warm in full sun or light, dappled shade.
  • Soil: Moist but well drained soil.
  • Hardiness: Borderline hardy. Although in some areas, Salix magnifica grows perfectly well outside, here in Derbyshire it can be challenging and we strongly advise planting it in a warm, sheltered position and protecting in cold winter weather.
  • Rate of Growth: Slow to moderate.
  • Habit: Salix magnifica eventually grows to be a shrub or eventually very small tree in a good position.
    • Height: 3 m (10 ft)
    • Spread: 2.5 m (8 ft)
  • Notes:  Please be aware that Salix magnifica can be a fickle and difficult plant in the winter, if caught by frost or if planted in a poor position. As such, it is not covered by our guarantee.
