(Japanese Raisin Tree) An unusual plant native to Eastern Asia, Hovenia dulcis grows to bevery small tree in the UK with oval or heart-shaped green leaves and clusters of creamy yellow flowers in Summer. These flowers appear on established plants and are followed by edible fruit which look a little like raisins.

Hovenia dulcis is reasonably hardy but is no good for cold exposed gardens as severe cold may knock it back. It will do best in a warm, sheltered position. 

Supplied Size: 3 or 4L containers (three to four years old, 100 - 125 cm tall)


  • Position: Warm in full sun or light, dappled shade.
  • Soil: Well drained, fertile soil.
  • Hardiness: Reasonably hardy. Hovenia dulcis requires a warm position sheltered from cold winds and may suffer from some die back in very cold winters.
  • Flowering Period: June - July
  • Flower Colour: Yellow.
  • Rate of Growth: Slow to moderate.
  • Habit: Hovenia dulcis grows to be a very small branching tree.
    • Height: up to 3 - 4 m (10 - 13 ft) - possibly a little more in warm, sunny areas.
    • Spread: 3 m (10 ft)
