Special Offer - This is an outstanding selection raised by Dr Karl Sax in 1939 at the Arnold Arboretum, USA and named after Professor Elmer Merrill, a former director of the arboretum. It has pure white, star-shaped flowers (up to 10 cm. wide) in spring. It is vigorous and grows to be a broad and spreading small tree. Tolerant of a wide range of soils, prefers full sun. After 10 years it will be 10-12 ft. tall by 8-10 ft. spread.

Supplied Size: 3L pots (approx 3 years old, 40 - 50 cm tall)

(was £22.50 - now £17.50)

  • Position: Full sun or light, dappled shade.
  • Soil: Well drained, fertile soils.
  • Hardiness: Hardy.
  • Flowering Period: March - April.
  • Rate of Growth: Moderate to vigorous.
  • Habit: Magnolia x loebneri 'Merrill' grows to be a large shrub or small branching tree with a somewhat rounded crown once established.
    • Height: 8 m (26 ft)
    • Spread: 6 m (20 ft)
  • Notes: We have found that although hardy, this Magnolia is best planted in an area which does not receive early morning sunlight in spring, as this combined with a frost can cause damage to the flowers.
