Rare in the UK, Quercus falcata var. pagodifolia is native to the South-east USA and grows to me a medium sized decideous tree with large, glossy green leaves which turn orange and red in autumn before falling. Established specimens develop handsome polished red-brown bark which is highly valued as timber.

Best in a sunny position with shelter from strong winds. 


  • Position: Full sun or light, dappled shade.
  • Soil: Any lime free, well drained soil. 
  • Hardiness: Hardy.
  • Rate of Growth: Moderate to vigorous.
  • Habit: Medium sized or eventually large tree, upright initially with a rounded crown once mature.
    • Height: up to 15 - 20 m (40 - 65 ft)
    • Spread: 10 - 15 m (32 - 50 ft)
  • Notes: Usually has better autumn colour if planted in acid soils.
