Quercus stellata is native to parts of the South-eastern US and grows to be a small to medium sized tree in the UK large, deeply lobed, dark green leaves which turn bronze and golden brown in autumn before falling. Slow growing, it is suitable for poor quality, well drained or dry soils and once established makes a very handsome specimen tree. 


  • Position: Full sun.
  • Soil: Dry or well drained. Quercus stellata will tolerate poor, infertile soil but avoid areas which are wet or prone to water-logging. 
  • Hardiness: Reasonably hardy. Prefers a position sheltered from cold wind.
  • Rate of Growth: Slow.
  • Habit: Quercus stellata   eventually grows to be a medium sized branching tree, upright when young, more rounded once mature. 
    • Height: 10 - 12 m (32 - 40 ft)
