Rare in the UK, Quercus variabilis grows to be a small to medium sized elegant tree with attractive corky bark once established. The leaves are dark green and chestnut-like, usually with a silvery underside turning shades of golden yellow before falling in autumn before falling.

Most suitable for a position in full sun with some shelter from strong winds.

  • Soil: Fertile, well drained. Avoid waterlogged soils.
  • Hardiness: Reasonably hardy.
  • Rate of Growth: Moderate
  • Habit:  Although larger in the wind, Quercus variabilis typically develops into a small to medium sized branching tree in the UK.
