Native to eastern North America, Quercus imbricaria is a medium sized, vigorous tree with long narrow, unlobed leaves. These leaves are glossy, dark green in spring and summer turning shades of golden-yellow and purple in autumn before falling.

Established specimens have smooth greyish-brown bark which were used by early settlers for shingles on roofs (hence the common name of 'Shingle Oak'). Best autumn colour will be seen once established if planted in an area with plenty of sun.
