A delightful and rare hybrid Magnolia which flowers well as a young plant and has rich purple-red, cup shaped flowers which appear nearly black on opening when viewed from a distance. Magnolia x 'J. C. Williams' grows to be a branching small garden tree and gives spectacular spring interest when it flowers.

  • Position: Full sun or light, dappled shade.
  • Soil: Well drained, fertile soils.
  • Hardiness: Reasonably hardy. Magnolia x 'J. C. Williams' appreciates shelter from strong winds.
  • Flowering Period: March - April.
  • Rate of Growth: Moderate.
  • Habit: Small tree with a strong upright habit.
    • Height: up to 8 m (26 ft)
    • Spread: 5 m (16 ft)
  • Notes: We have found that although hardy, Magnolia x 'J. C.
