Description

A fascinating and rare oak tree in the United Kingdom, Quercus velutina 'Albertsii' has huge leaves with a specimen on the nursery here having leaves on long stalks, 36 cm long by 20 cm wide this year (2011). In the summer time these impressive leaves are dark green, turning attractive shades of orange/red and bronze before falling in autumn. 

Although slow to establish, Quercus velutina 'Albertsii' grows at a good rate once established and will eventually be a medium sized tree.

Supplied Size: 2L deep containers (20 - 30 cm tall)


  • Position: Full sun or light, dappled shade.
  • Soil: Well drained, fertile soil. Quercus velutina 'Albertsii' prefers a lime free soil if possible.
  • Hardiness: Hardy.
  • Rate of Growth: Slow until established then moderate.
  • Habit: Medium sized or eventually large, branching tree.
    • Height: 20 m (65 ft)
    • Spread: 15 m (50 ft)
  • Important: Although wind tolerant, Quercus velutina 'Albertsii' will produce its largest leaves if planted in a position sheltered from strong winds.
