Description

Available Autumn/Winter 2017 A rare, evergreen species of Oak native to northern parts of Mexico, Quercus rhysophylla has bold, large (up to 25 cm long) leaves, shaped like those of a laurel but lighter in texture.

The new growth in spring is a beautiful, rich-purple before darkening to green as it ages. Late flushes of young growth in July / August may also be the same, vivid purple colour.

Quercus rhysophylla is an unusual and colourful garden tree growing best in a position sheltered from strong winds!

Supplied Size: 2L deep containers (40 - 60 cm tall)


  • Position: Full sun or light, dappled shade.
  • Soil: Moist yet well drained, fertile soil.
  • Hardiness: Reasonably hardy. Quercus rhysophylla requires shelter from cold winter winds.
  • Rate of Growth: Moderate.
  • Habit: Quercus rhysophylla grows to be a small, branching tree.
    • Height: up to 10 m (32 ft)
    • Spread: 8 m (26 ft)
