Native to parts of the Southern United States, Quercus hemisphaerica is semi-evergreen in the UK with long, narrow glossy green leaves sometimes with small lobes at the apex. In a cold winter some leaves may fall and be replaced in the following Spring. Somewhat similar in appearance to Quercus laurifolia.

Quite vigorous, established trees have a handsome branching habit.


  • Position: Full sun.
  • Soil: Well drained, fertile soil. Avoid damp or wet areas.
  • Hardiness: Somewhat hardy. Shelter from cold winds and avoid planting in open exposed areas.
  • Rate of Growth: Moderate to vigorous.
  • Habit: Quercus hemisphaerica eventually grows to be a branching medium sized tree.
    • Height: 10 - 12 m (32 - 40 ft)
    • Spread: 8 - 10 m (26 - 32 ft)
