(Castor Oil Tree) A rare and deciduous Japanese tree, Kalopanax septemlobus f maximowiczii has swollen, late winter buds which open into glossy, dark green, maple-like, deeply lobed leaves.
The plants currently available are too large to be sent out with our mail order service and can only be ordered for collection from our nursery.

A rare and deciduous Japanese tree, Kalopanax septemlobus f maximowiczii has swollen, late winter buds which open into glossy, dark green, maple-like, deeply lobed leaves. The stems are armed with fearsome prickles and large, flat, heads of small white flowers, popular with bees and other insects are produced in late summer.
An unusual tree with a distinctly oriental feel about it, Kalopanax septemlobus f maximowiczii is a fine choice of tree for gardens where something 'a little bit different' is required!
- Position: Full sun or partial shade.
- Soil: Well drained, fertile soil.
- Hardiness: Hardy.
- Flowering Period: July - August.
- Rate of Growth: Slow to moderate.
- Habit: Small or eventually a medium sized tree with an oval crown.
- Height: 12 m (40 ft).
- Spread: 8 m (26 ft).
- Notes: Named in honour of the Russian botanist, Maximowicz. Based in St. Petersburg he travelled widely in Siberia, Mongolia and Japan during the 19th century and introduced many fine plants! This plant is also known as Kalopanax pictus var maximowiczii.
