Stunning new introduction from the JC Raulston Arboretum in North Carolina, Sinocalycanthus raulstonii 'Hartlage Wine' has lightly scented, maroon flowers up to 7½ cm across.

These colourful flowers stand out well against the glossy green leaves. The leaves turn pleasant shades of yellow before falling in autumn. Sinocalycanthus raulstonii 'Hartlage Wine' is an unusual and sought after garden plant!

  • Position: Full sun or light, dappled shade.
  • Soil: Well drained yet moist, fertile soil. Sinocalycanthus raulstonii 'Hartlage Wine' generally does not grow well in a shallow, chalky soil.
  • Hardiness: Reasonably hardy. Sinocalycanthus raulstonii 'Hartlage Wine' requires protection from cold winter winds.
  • Flowering Period: May - June.
  • Rate of Growth: Moderate.
  • Habit: Eventually a medium sized branching shrub.
    • Height: up to 3 m (10 ft)
