Unusual in the UK, Acer monspessulanum is native to the Mediterranean region and grows as a small, deciduous tree with dark green, leathery leaves similar in appearance to those of the field maple. New leaves in spring can have a purple tint with some yellow autumn tints before the leaves fall.
