A rare species of Birch in the UK, Betula maximowicziana is native to Japan and has very large leaves, lush green in the summer and turning clear yellow before falling in autumn. Established plants produce ornamental catkins. The bark tends to be quite dark, slowly turning grey or white as it matures.
An unusual hardy specimen tree which although hardy will appreciate a position sheltered from the worst of the wind, where the large leaves will develop to best effect.
