A very unusual semi-evergreen shrub native to parts of China with eye-catching clusters of blue (or purple-pink flowers depending on soil pH). The leaves are large and dark green. In a cold winter if the leaves do fall they develop purple and orange tints. The Flowers are followed by dark bluish fruit later in the year once established. Generally a little more compact than the similar Dichroa febrifuga once established.

Dichroa daimingshanensis requires a very warm, sheltered position in sun or light shade and grows to be a small garden shrub in the United Kingdom. 


  • Position: Full sun or light, dappled shade.
  • Soil: Moist yet well drained, lime free fertile soil.
  • Hardiness: Frost tender. Dichroa daimingshanensis REQUIRES significant winter protection and can suffer damage in severe cold. It can be grown successfully in a cold conservatory.
  • Flowering Period: July - August.
  • Flower Colour: Blue in acid soils (purple-pink in neutral soils).
  • Rate of Growth: Moderate.
  • Habit: Dichroa daimingshanensis grows to be a small or eventually medium sized, rounded shrub.
    • Height: up to 1.2 - 1.5 m (4 - 5ft)
    • Spread: 1.5 m (5 ft)
