A rare and semi-evergreen, Hydrangea-like shrub native to parts of China and south-east Asia, Dichroa febrifuga hasdark blue flowers in summer followed by dark purple-blue fruit later in autumn. The leaves are large and dark green.

Dichroa febrifuga requires a very warm, sheltered position in sun or light shade and grows to be a small garden shrub in the United Kingdom. The leaves can sometimes fall during a cold autumn or winter and if so turn yellow or bronze.


  • Position: Full sun or light, dappled shade.
  • Soil: Moist yet well drained, lime-free fertile soil.
  • Hardiness: Frost tender. Dichroa febrifuga REQUIRES significant winter protection and can suffer damage in severe cold. It can be grown successfully in a cold conservatory.
