Unusual in the UK, Acer monspessulanum is native to the Mediterranean region and grows as a small, deciduous tree with dark green, leathery leaves similar in appearance to those of the field maple. New leaves in spring can have a purple tint with some yellow autumn tints before the leaves fall.

Established plants often grow with a densely branching, often multi-stemmed habit. Enjoys a position with plenty of sun and fairly drought tolerant.

  • Soil: Any well drained soil. Avoid wet areas or positions prone to waterlogging.
  • Hardiness: Hardy. 
  • Rate of Growth: Slow to moderate.
