A tough and reliable plant, Hosta 'Sum and Substance' is very ornamental with exceptionally large, heart-shaped, chartreuse-green leave. Narrow spikes of tubular lilac-white flowers standing above the foliage are produced in summer.

Hosta 'Sum and Substance' will usually have best leaf colour if in a sunny spot but the leaves can scorch in full sun, so a position with dappled afternoon light is usually preferred.
