Rare cultivar with eye-catching golden leaves was discovered near Vranje in Serbia and first introduced to horticulture via Prof Dragaevic by Spath in the early 1890's.

The name is derived from the Serbian word for gold, "zlato" and the young leaves of this delightful tree are soft golden-yellow, darkening to a deep green as they age later in the year.
