New to us, Blechnum brasiliense 'Volcano' is an evergreen, low growing tree fern native to South America which has glossy dark green fronds with young growth being bronze-red in colour. 

Best in a warm, sheltered position in light or heavy shade. Avoid cold, windy areas.


  • Position: Light, dappled or heavy shade.
  • Soil: Moist, fertile soil.
  • Hardiness: Not particularly hardy. Tolerates cold down to approx -1oC to -3oC but requires a mild, sheltered position and protection in cold winters. Can be grown in a container and moved into a greenhouse or similar over winter. Not at all suitable for cold or exposed areas.
  • Rate of Growth: Slow.
  • Habit:  Blechnum brasiliense 'Volcano' grows to be a small tree fern, gradually developing a short trunk in a good position.
    • Height: up to 1 - 1.5m (3 - 5 ft)
    • Spread: 1 m (3 - 4 ft)
