A rare small to medium sized birch with beautiful, chocolate coloured bark once established and best when planted to contrast with other nearby silver birch or a light backdrop. Summer leaves are dark green in colour.

Hardy, medium sized specimen tree once established with unusual coloured bark.


  • Position: Full sun or light, dappled shade.
  • Soil: Any fertile soil.
  • Hardiness: Hardy.
  • Rate of Growth: Vigorous (moderate if grown as a multi-stemmed tree)
  • Habit: Small or medium sized tree with a slender habit.
    • Height: 15 m (50 ft)

  • Notes: For best effect, the bark should be scrubbed gently with a hand brush and water once a year. This removes any green algae or grime and helps to restore the colour. Bark colour can take 2 - 4 years to develop.
