Native to Eastern Australia, this is a beautiful slow growing tree fern with impressively long, deeply divided dark green fronds once established. This fern gradually develops a trunk but it does take some years and is not for instant gratification.

Dicksonia antarctica is best suited to damp, sheltered areas in a shady garden.


  • Position: Light, dappled or heavy shade.
  • Soil: Moist, fertile soil. Will grow well in acid soils.
  • Hardiness: Frost tender. Avoid planting in cold, exposed areas. Requires protection in winter.
  • Rate of Growth: Slow.
  • Habit: Dicksonia antarctica  grows to be a tree fern with a trunk and crown of fronds once mature.
    • Height: up to 2 - 2.5 m (6 - 8 ft)
    • Spread: up to 1 - 2 m (3 - 6 ft)
