A very rare evergreen tree, Xanthocyparis vietnamensis is native to parts of Vietnam with golden-green foliage and both juvenile leaves (usually more, soft wide and spreading) and mature leaves (more needle/scale-like) on the same plant once established. Established specimens develop interesting reddish bark.

Requires a warm, very sheltered position ideally in an area with mild winters. Not suitable for cold, exposed areas.


  • Position: Full sun or light, dappled shade.
  • Soil: Prefers moist, fertile soil. 
  • Hardiness: Somewhat hardy. Needs shelter and protection in cold winters.
  • Rate of Growth: Slow to moderate.
  • Habit: Xanthocyparis vietnamensis grows to be a small conical tree.
    • Height: 4 - 5 m (13 - 16 ft)
    • Spread: 3 m (10 ft).
  • Notes: Please be aware that Xanthocyparis vietnamensis is a fickle and difficult plant to grow at the best of tines. It can be damaged or killed in the winter, if caught by frost, if planted in a poor position, if disturbed once planted and seeming even just by bad luck. As such, it is not covered by our guarantee.
