This blue Redwood was first introduced to the United Kingdom in 1860 and two of the original specimens continue to thrive at Elvaston Castle near Derby. A rare selection with steel-blue foliage and chestnut red bark when established, Sequoiadendron giganteum 'Glaucum' also seems to have a slightly more narrow habit then a classic Sequoiadendron giganteum when young.

A spectacular and unusual cultivar with fetching blue-grey foliage.


  • Position: Full sun.
  • Soil: Moist or well drained, fertile soil. Sequoiadendron giganteum 'Glaucum' does not enjoy shallow, chalky soils.
  • Hardiness: Very hardy.
  • Rate of Growth: Vigorous.
  • Habit: Eventually a very tall tree with a conical, upright habit.
    • Height: 50+ m (164 ft) in the U.K.
    • Spread: 10 m (32 ft).
  • Notes: Once established, Sequoiadendron giganteum 'Glaucum' are resistant both to wind and drought.
