Quercus rubra 'Evenley Gold' is a very handsome tree with soft golden-green leaves in summer turning pink and red in autumn here in Derbyshire. The leaves seem to be more resistant to summer leaf scorch than those of a typical Quercus rubra 'Aurea' and so they should keep their colour well in most conditions.

We have several specimens of this tree growing in our arboretum which were given to us originally by Timothy Whiteley of Evenley Wood Garden.

  • Position: Full sun or light, dappled shade.
  • Soil: Well drained, fertile soil. The autumn colour of Quercus rubra 'Evenley Gold' is somewhat dependant upon the soil pH and the foliage will produce a better, stronger autumn colour in more acidic soils.
  • Hardiness: Hardy. Quercus rubra 'Evenley Gold' requires shelter from strong winds.
  • Rate of Growth: Moderate.
  • Habit: Eventually a medium sized tree with a branching, rounded crown.
    • Height: 12 - 15 m (40 - 50 ft)
