Native to Western China, Prunus mume 'Beni-Chidori' has masses of fragrant, carmine-pink, flowers in early spring which appear several weeks before the flowers of other Japanese cherries. The beautiful fragrance of almonds can sometimes be noticed from a considerable distance on a still day.
The leaves when they emerge are pale green in spring / summer and show colourful apricot pink tints in a good, crisp autumn. Prunus mume 'Beni-Chidori' is a lovely flowering garden tree.
