Rare in the UK, Nothofagus moorei is a handsome evergreen shrub or eventually small tree native to Australia which has long dark green, toothed leathery leaves. Established trees develop distinctive scaly bark.

Nothofagus moorei is not reliably hardy in the UK and requires a very sheltered, warm position ideally with plenty of sun and in the South. As a result it is best to consider it a shrub or at most very small tree here as even in a favourable position it is likely that the top will be scorched in winter from time to time, limiting the size.

  • Position: Full sun.
  • Soil: Well drained or moist, fertile soil.
  • Hardiness: Not hardy. Requires a very warm, sheltered position to survive outside in the UK. Will require protection in winter.
  • Rate of Growth: Moderate .
  • Habit: Large shrub or eventually very small tree.
    • Height: 3 - 4 m (10 - 13 ft).
    • Spread: 2 - 3 m (6 - 10 ft).
  • Notes: Nothofagus moorei is a tricky plant to grow well in the U.K. and should only be  attempted by experienced gardeners who are prepared to protect it in winter. Please be aware that Nothofagus moorei is a difficult plant and as such, it is not covered by our guarantee.
