Rare in the UK, Nothofagus moorei is a handsome evergreen shrub or eventually small tree native to Australia which has long dark green, toothed leathery leaves. Established trees develop distinctive scaly bark.
Although a tall tree in its natural habitat, Nothofagus moorei is not reliably hardy in the UK and requires a very sheltered, warm position ideally with plenty of sun and in the South. As a result it is best to consider it a shrub or at most very small tree here as even in a favourable position it is likely that the top will be scorched in winter from time to time, limiting the size.
