An unusual and handsome, deciduous tree native to parts of South America which has large, dark green, deeply veined leaves similar to those of a hornbeam which turn vibrant shades of yellow, orange and red in autumn before falling.

Reasonably vigorous, this will gradually develop into a medium sized or eventually large tree and best autumn colour is typically seen when planted in a position with plenty of sun and a little shelter from strong winds.

  • Soil: Well drained or moist, fertile soil. Nothofagus alpina will not grow well in a shallow, chalky soil.
  • Hardiness: Hardy.
  • Rate of Growth: Moderate to vigorous.
