Native to parts of Eastern and Central USA, Juglans nigra is a reasonably vigorous tree with large, pinnate leaves up to 60 cm long which are aromatic when crushed. These leaves emerge in late spring and are dark green in colour. Established plants do produce nuts which although are edible are not quite the same as those commonly seen for sale in supermarkets, etc (which come from  Juglans regia).

A superb ornamental specimen tree, most suited for a sunny position ideally with a little shelter from strong winds.

  • Position: Full sun or light, dappled shade.
  • Soil: Well drained, fertile soil.
  • Hardiness: Reasonably hardy. Juglans nigra appreciates shelter from cold winter winds.
  • Rate of Growth: Moderate to vigorous.
  • Habit: Eventually a medium sized tree with a branching, open habit.
    • Height: 15 - 20 m (50 - 65 ft).
    • Spread: 10 - 12 m (32 - 40ft).

Further Information

The magnificent Black Walnut was introduced from Eastern and Central North America in the seventeenth century.

Walnuts should be planted as young as possible as they dislike root disturbance; old specimens are valued for their superb timber.
