(Winter berry or Deciduous Holly) A stunning deciduous holly native to American which has masses of large, bright red berries covering the branches in late autumn and into winter. The summer leaves are dark green in colour with yellow and purple tints before falling in autumn.

Best fruit display will be seen in a position with plenty of sun. Fantastic for winter interest.

This package includes 1 x Ilex verticillata 'Jingle Bells' (3L pot, 3 - 4 years old, 30 - 40 cm tall) and 1 x male Ilex verticillata (rootballed, 3 years old, 30 - 40 cm tall) which is the male pollinator. The male plant will not berry but should be planted within 2 - 3 m of the female in a sunny position. These cannot be purchased from us seperately.

  • Position: Best fruit display in full sun.
  • Soil: Well drained, fertile soil. Avoid waterlogged areas. Does not usually enjoy alkaline soils. 
  • Hardiness: Hardy.
  • Rate of Growth: Moderate.
  • Habit: These Ilex verticillata grows to be a large, somewhat upright shrub in time although they can be pruned to size if required. 
    • Height: up to 2 - 2.5 m (6 - 8 ft)
    • Spread: 1.5 - 2 m (5 - 6 ft)
  • Notes: Once planted these will both establish and grow well but it may take up to 1 - 2 years for the young male plant to start flowering and pollinating the female.
