An impressive shrub, Hydrangea aspera 'Macrophylla' is an introduction by Ernest Wilson with very large, felted leaves and lace-cap flower heads. The flowers are tiny and lilac purple in colour surrounded by white sterile florets and appear in late summer. Very established plants develop attractive reddish peeling bark.

Most suited for a position in light or partial shade with the best leaf size generally being seen if planted in a spot sheltered from strong winds.
