Crinodendron hookerianum 'Ada Hoffman'

A lovely new cultivar of Lantern tree, this is a medium sized evergreen shrub once established, similar to the more familiar Crinodendron hookerianum, except that it has masses of delicate, pale pink (rather than red), lantern-like flowers in early summer.

The leaves are dark green in colour and stay through the winter although some may fall in very cold winters and be replaced the following year.

A superb flowering shrub for a warm garden border in dappled shade. Can be grown well in a large container.

• Position: Dappled or partial shade.
• Soil: Well drained, acid soil.
• Hardiness: Reasonably hardy. Crinodendron hookerianum 'Ada Hoffman' requires shelter from cold winter winds.
• Flowering Period: May - June.
• Flower Colour: Pale pink
• Rate of Growth: Moderate.
• Habit: Crinodendron hookerianum 'Ada Hoffman' grows to be a medium sized or eventually large, branching shrub or possibly larger in very favourable areas.

  • Spread: 3 m (10 ft).

• Notes: After a particularly cold, frosty spell in winter, the leaves of Crinodendron hookerianum 'Ada Hoffman' may bruise a little and turn bronze/purple in colour or fall completely. It generally recovers well and new leaves will emerge in the following year.
