Rare in the UK, Cornus excelsa is native to Mexico growing to be a large shrub here and semi-evergreen, holding some of its leaves through the winter. Clusters of interesting small white flowers in early summer followed by pale greenish white berries which turn dark blue, nearly black as they age.

Most suited to a warm, sheltered position.


  • Position: Full sun or light, dappled shade.
  • Soil: Most well drained, fertile soil. Avoid waterlogged areas.
  • Hardiness: Reasonably Hardy. Requires shelter from cold winds and protection from late spring 
  • Flowering Period: May - June.
