A magnificent new selection, Cercis canadensis 'Merlot' grows to be a small, often branching tree with vibrant dark purple-red heart-shaped leaves in summer which turn orange and gold before falling in autumn. Established plants have clusters of pretty pink flowers on the bare stems in late Spring before or as the young leaves emerge.

Cercis canadensis 'Merlot' is similar to the well known Cercis canadensis 'Forest Pansy' but it is more heat tolerant with a more compact habit. 


  • Position: Full sun. Very heat tolerant.
  • Soil: Fertile, well-drained soils. Cercis canadensis 'Merlot' dislikes very wet or poorly drained soils.
  • Hardiness: Hardy.
  • Flowering Period: April.
  • Flower Colour: Pink
  • Rate of Growth: Slow until established then moderate.
  • Habit: Cercis canadensis 'Merlot' eventually grows to be a branching large shrub or very small tree.
    • Height: 5 - 6 m (16 - 20 ft) 
    • Spread: 4 - 5 m (13 - 16 ft)
  • Notes: Cercis do not transplant well and should be left undisturbed once planted in position. Please do not feed this Cercis with artificial plant food after planting it out, this can severely damage the root system.
