A highly ornamental large branching shrub or eventually very small, normally multi-stemmed tree,  Cercis canadensis 'The Rising Sun' has heart-shaped leaves, orange-gold tints when they emerge in Spring, turning yellow and green in summer. The autumn colour is orange, bronze and yellow. Clusters of vibrant pink flowers appear one the branches before/as the leaves emerge in late spring once established.

For best foliage colour and flower display plant Cercis canadensis 'The Rising Sun' in a warm position with plenty of sun and ideally some shelter from strong winds..


  • Position: Full sun.
  • Soil: Fertile, well-drained soils. Cercis canadensis 'The Rising Sun' dislikes very wet or poorly drained soils.
  • Hardiness: Hardy.
  • Flowering Period: April.
  • Flower Colour: Pink
  • Rate of Growth: Slow until established then moderate.
  • Habit: Cercis canadensis 'The Rising Sun' eventually grows to be a branching large shrub or very small tree.
    • Height: 4 - 5 m (13 - 16 ft)
    • Spread: 3 - 4 m (10 - 13 ft)
  • Notes: Cercis do not transplant well and should be left undisturbed once planted in position. Please do not feed this Cercis with artificial plant food after planting it out, this can severely damage the root system.
