A handsome, low spreading evergreen shrub with glossy dark green leaves and masses of bright blue flower clusters in early summer which are popular with bees and butterflies.

This is a spreading shrub if left to its own devices but can be grown against a sunny wall or fence for more height.

  • Position: Warm and sheltered position in full sun.
  • Soil: Well drained soil. Avoid wet soils.
  • Hardiness: Somewhat hardy. Ceanothus thyrsiflorus var. repens may be damaged in severe cold and will require protection in cold winters. In cold areas this will require shelter from strong winds.
  • Flowering Period: May - June.
  • Rate of Growth: Moderate.
  • Habit: Ceanothus thyrsiflorus var. repens grows to be a spreading low shrub if untrained.
    • Height: up to 80 - 100 cm (2 - 3 ft) or taller if trained
    • Spread: eventually up to 2.5 - 4 m (8 - 13 ft) if unpruned
  • Pruning: Remove dead or damaged branches in spring and prune lightly after flowering if required.
  • Notes: Please note that although we usually guarantee plants for a year after purchase, we will NOT replace failed Ceanothus thyrsiflorus var. repens as they can be severely damaged or killed by poor pruning, sitting in wet ground or cold winters if in a cold area or not protected properly.
