Rare in the UK, Carpinus pubescens is native to parts of South-west China and Vietnam, growing to be a small tree with pendulous, arching branches and dark green leaves, tinted bronze when young.

Requires a warm, sunny position with shelter from strong winds. Not suitable at all for cold, exposed areas.


  • Position: Sun or light, dappled shade.
  • Soil: Moist, fertile soil. 
  • Hardiness: Somewhat hardy. Best in a mild, sheltered position - may require protection in severe winters.
  • Flowering Period: April - May.
  • Rate of Growth: Moderate.
  • Habit: In the UK, Carpinus pubescens usually grows to  be a small branching with a pendulous, semi weeping habit.
