A low spreading fern, Blechnum penna-marina has small, pinnate (feather-like), dark green fronds which are sometimes bronze or dark red when they emerge in spring. Very good as an evergreen ground cover plant as it slowly spreads.

Blechnum penna-marina is best in a position in light dappled or heavy shade. It can also be grown very successfully in a container, provided it is in a shady position.

  • Soil: Moist, fertile soil.
  • Hardiness: Hardy.
  • Rate of Growth: Slow.
  • Habit: Blechnum penna-marina grows to be a very small, clump forming fern.
    • Height: up to 20 cm (½ - 1 ft)
    • Spread: eventually up to 100 - 120 cm in time (3 - 4 ft)
