Akebia trifoliata

Unusual and deciduous climber, Akebia trifoliata is an elegant plant with lush green, three lobed leaflets. Small clusters of dark purple flowers with a faint scent appear in spring, followed by long, sausage-like fruit later in the year after a warm summer. A lovely climbing plant for a sheltered garden.

• Position: Sheltered in sun or partial shade.
• Soil: Moist yet well drained, fertile soil.
• Hardiness: Reasonably hardy. Akebia trifoliata requires protection from cold winter winds.
