New to us, Acer truncatum 'Volcano' is an unusual compact branching shrub or eventually very small tree with vibrant reddish-pink young leaves and yellow veins in spring which gradually turns darker lime green later on in summer. The leaves turn shades of purple and orange before falling in autumn.

Best in a sunny position, ideally with a little shelter from strong winds. Can be grown in a large container.


  • Position: Full sun or partial shade.
  • Soil: Moist or well drained, fertile soil. Tolerant of dry soil conditions.
  • Hardiness: Hardy. Acer truncatum 'Volcano'  appreciated shelter from strong winds.
  • Rate of Growth: Slow.
  • Habit: Large compact, bushy shrub or eventually very small tree. 
    • Height: 2.5 - 3 m (8 - 10 ft) 
    • Spread: 2.5 m (8 ft) 
  • Notes: Acer truncatum 'Volcano' will produce better autumn colour in lime free or acid soils and once established is reasonably tolerant of dry conditions and heat.
