Alnus

Generally fast growing, slender, medium sized and very hardy trees which are happy in most soils except shallow soils over chalk. Particularly useful for difficult sites, they thrive in damp conditions. As late as the 1920's alder wood was used in the manufacture of clogs in Northern counties of England.
