(Japanese Alder) Unusual in the UK, this is a reasonably vigorous, deciduous small to medium sized upright tree which often develops slightly pendulous, arching branches once established. The leaves are an attractive dark green in colour turning shades of bronze and yellow before falling in autumn. Established trees develop greenish-yellow catkins in spring.

Fairly hardy and best in sun or dappled shade. Tolerates quite damp ground but does not seem to enjoy prolonged flooding.
