(Witch Hazel) Hamamelis x intermedia 'Diane' is a large shrub with vibrant red winter flowers which was raised in 1969 at Although arboretum in Belgium. These flowers are scented, long-petalled and have a slightly crumpled appearance. The foliage has rich red and orange autumn tints.

A vase-shaped, deciduous shrub or very small tree with flowers that give excellent late winter interest. Attractive leaves and  good autumn colour in October.

This vibrant selection of witch hazel with red flowers is one of the best Hamamelis for deep-red petal colour. These flowers are scented, long-petalled and have a slightly crumpled appearance. The foliage has rich red and orange autumn tints.

  • Position: Full sun or light, dappled shade.
  • Soil: Well drained, fertile soil. Hamamelis x intermedia 'Diane' dislikes shallow, chalk soil and will not grow well in wet or waterlogged conditions.
  • Hardiness: Hardy. As a young plant, Hamamelis x intermedia 'Diane' may require protection from severe, late spring frosts once the young leaves have emerged in spring.
  • Flowering Period: January - March.
  • Rate of Growth: Moderate.
  • Habit: Hamamelis x intermedia 'Diane' grows to be a large branching shrub with a vase-shaped habit.
