Description

Unusual in the UK, Chaenomeles cathayensis is a deciduous shrub with masses of  pink flushed white flowers in spring, followed by handsome, edible large fruit later in the year. These fruit can be used to make jams or jellies. The leaves are tinted purple in spring, green later on.

Best flowers and fruit will be seen if grown in a warm, sunny position.

  • Soil: Fertile, well-drained soils.
  • Hardiness: Hardy.

  • Habit: Chaenomeles cathayensis  grows to be a medium sized or eventually large densely branching, rounded shrub.

  • Notes: Chaenomeles cathayensis has some thorns and therefore it can also be planted to create a very effective barrier.
