(Szechuan Pepper) Unusual in the UK, this is a  deciduous large shrub or eventually very small, often branching multi-stemmed tree which has pinnate (feather-like) dark green leaves and spiny stems. Clusters of small greenish-yellow flowers in early summer are followed by red fruit on female plants which split to reveal black seed.

Best in a position with plenty of sun and good drainage.
