A rare tree, Tilia henryana has large, ovate (shaped like an egg) leaves which are edged with bristle-like teeth and an eye-catching silvery-pink colour, as they unfold in spring. The second flush of growth, in late summer (called Lammas growth) is also silvery-pink and this contrasts beautifully with the mature green leaves.

Small clusters of creamy-white, fragrant flowers that are borne in profusion on mature plants in late summer.

A lovely, slow growing garden tree most suitable to sun or dappled shade with some shelter from strong winds.

  • Position: Full sun or light, dappled shade.
  • Soil: Moist or well drained, fertile soil.
  • Hardiness: Hardy. Tilia henryana will produce larger leaves when sheltered from strong winds.
  • Flowering Period: August - September.
  • Flower Colour: Creamy white
  • Rate of Growth: Slow.
  • Habit: Tilia henryana eventually grows to be a medium sized branching tree with a rounded crown.
    • Height: up to 15 m (50 ft)
    • Spread: 10 m (32 ft)
  • Notes: A superb ornamental tree, if we could only take ten trees of our choice to a temperate 'desert island', Tilia henryana would certainly be on our list!
